After years of rumors and theorizing, Chinese tech giant HUAWEI has finally revealed its own operating system HarmonyOS in 2019. It’s evident that many questions have been asked and not answered yet.
- So will the new system replace Android?
- What are the unique benefits that it will add to the developers?
All these questions will be answered below.
Huawei’s new operating system!

In brief, HarmonyOS ( 鸿蒙OS; Hóngméng OS) is a new microkernel-based, distributed operating system designed to deliver a new user experience across all devices and scenarios. Although the name Hongmeng might not mean much to non-Chinese speakers, it has attracted attention in China.
But wait, Microkernel? I’ve lost you here.
Let’s simplify this. At the heart of every operating system is something called a kernel. As the name implies, kernels are at the heart of every operating system, effectively serving as a foundation. They handle interactions with the underlying hardware, allocate resources, and define how programs are executed and operated.
All kernels have these fundamental responsibilities. However, they differ in how they work.
Parts of the CEO speech
Let not go far as we have a brief definition of Harmony with the CEO words :
« We’re entering a day and age where people expect a holistic, intelligent experience across all devices and scenarios. To support this, we felt it was important to have an operating system with improved cross-platform capabilities. We needed an OS that supports all scenarios, that can be used across a broad range of devices and platforms, and that can meet consumer demand for low latency and strong security.» said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei’s Consumer Business Group.
Richard added, « HarmonyOS is completely different from Android and iOS. It is a microkernel-based, distributed OS that delivers a smooth experience across all scenarios. It has a trustworthy and secure architecture, and it supports seamless collaboration across devices. You can develop your apps once, then flexibly deploy them across a range of different devices.»
The report also cites Richard Yu, saying that « this year’s Huawei smartwatch products will also be equipped with Hongmeng OS. In the future, all of Huawei’s IoT products, including PCs, tablets, and even mobile phones, may use Hongmeng OS.»
Android VS. HarmonyOS

Right now, Huawei is mistreatment this OS for IoT devices like smart displays, wearables, smart speakers, and additional. However, CEO conjointly mentioned that they would deploy the Harmony OS in their smartphones if they cannot use android.
Huawei is creating an open-source platform similar to android, so suggests that any smartphone
company will use the OS while not paying any licensing fees, that is big.
Also, they added that every android apps are going to be compatible with their operating system, which makes Google very disquieted concerning..
So should we believe Huawei will build it work once giants like Microsoft and Samsung failed
to do so.
The reasons why Huawei’s Harmony OS will be tough on Android :
1/Will the harmonyos be compatible with the android app?
The new HarmonyOS are going to be compatible with android apps. Therefore the app system isn’t a problem, But it is not that easy either. We still do not know whether or not the apps that employment thus sensible on android would perform the same in harmony OS.
For example, BlackBerry tried similar issue years agone by creating Blackberry OS compatible with Android apps however, the app expertise on Blackberry phones was wrong, and apps wont to crash quite typically. So yeah, if Huawei will port apps while not these issues, then the app system isn’t a concern for this new OS.
2/Do the developers have any other choice than creating their own apps?
Say android apps don’t work correctly on the operating system HarmonyOS, Huawei will produce their own App system. You see, around five-hundredths of Huawei smartphones are sold in China.
That means out of two hundred million smartphones that Huawei sold in 2018, a hundred million of them were sold in China alone. And android apps are banned in that country, so it suggests that albeit Huawei suddenly decides to deploy harmony OS in their smartphones in China, individuals would don’t have any drawback shift to the new operating system.
On high of it, ever since the trade ban, Huawei has the Chinese government, individuals, and massive tech in China behind it that bodes well for building AN app store and system.
Suppose Huawei is selling many smartphones with Harmony OS put in. In that case, the developers can have no selection, however, to create apps for this new operating system.
3/ The explosion of HarmonyOs
HarmonyOS: The side of developers

The changes that HarmonyOS will brings to Huawei’s users
Huawei believes operating system HarmonyOS can bring new advantages to customers, instrumentation vendors, and developers. “We believe HarmonyOS will revitalize the industry and enrich the ecosystem,” said Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei Consumer BG. “Our goal is to bring people a truly engaging and diverse experience. We want to invite developers worldwide to join us as we build out this new ecosystem. Together, we will deliver an intelligent experience for consumers in all scenarios.”
As developers are ready to grab a lot of users with less investment and to make services across all scenarios because it powered by a multi-device IDE, multi-language unified compilation, and a distributed architecture kit so HarmonyOS IDE will mechanically adapt to totally different screen layout controls and interactions, and support each drag-and-drop control and preview-oriented visual programming.
The new OS might begin showing on different phones as early as next year, in step with the company’s mobile CEO Richard Yu.
The launch of the operating system HarmonyOS 2.0 is done gradually:
• From September 10 for devices with between 128 computer memory units and 128 MB of RAM.
• From April 2021 for devices with between 128 MB and 4 GB of RAM.
• From Octobre 2021 for all devices, including those with over 4 GB of RAM.
